The Maneki Neko legend says that a cat was lounging outside a Shinto sanctuary when it saw a samurai. The warrior was taking shelter under a tree because the storm was starting to hit hard. He spotted the cat who beckoned him to come closer. When he left his shelter, a lightning cut the tree in two. To thank the cat, he financed the sanctuary so that the monk who lived there and his cat would not lack anything.The Samurai made the temple a spiritual and resting place for his family. The sanctuary became later the Gotokuji temple A Maneki neko statue was built in the effigy of the cat and so according to this Japanese folklore the Maneki neko cat became a symbol of luck.
