There are several uses for an umbrella: a shield against the elements of nature, a walking stick or cane, a weapon, or simply as a fashion accessory. The traditional Japanese umbrella was first brought to Japan from China at the beginning of the Heian period. Originally it was meant to be used by the royal family and aristocrats to guard them from evil spirits and sunlight instead of rain.
