Hakama are a type of traditional Japanese pant-like garment. These trousers were originally worn by the Chinese royal court throughout the Sui and Tang dynasties, and from the sixth century onwards they have been used by Japanese people in the form of the hakama. Japanese hakama are tied around the waist and fall roughly to the ankles and are worn over a kimono. Initially, hakama were exclusively worn by men. However, nowadays, women also wear a hakama on some occasions.
